IN Health Officials Say Your Cough May Be No Big Whoop

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) -- State health officials say the whooping cough outbreaks that have swept across numerous states this year haven't reach Indiana so far.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the U.S. appears headed for its worst year for whooping cough in more than five decades, with nearly 18,000 cases have been reported so far this year. That's more than twice the number seen at this point last year.

State Health Department epidemiologist Angie Cierzniewski (SIHZH'-new-ski) tells the Herald-Times that Indiana has had 118 reported pertussis cases so far this year.

At that rate, Indiana's total cases for 2012 could fall below last year's total of 367 and well below 2010's total of 744. That year's tally was the highest number Indiana has experienced in more than 50 years.
