The Health Department is still investigating the source of a salmonella outbreak believed to stem from Indiana cantaloupes. More than 140 cases have been reported in 20 different states, and there have been two related deaths in Kentucky.
Its a staple on most picnic tables this time of year. But with the recent salmonella outbreak, 141 confirmed cases in 20 states, people are leery about biting into the popular fruit.
The USDA is working with health departments in affected states trying to track down the source, which they believe to be here in Southern Indiana. But a farmer from Ritter Farms in Gibson County says not all melons are at risk.
But Purdue University's Hans Schmitz says from farmers to the consumers, everybody loses. Schmitz says its important to wash everything carefully. He says once the USDA finishes its investigation, consumers' fears can be eased.
