High Water Soaking Most Of Southern Illinois, Could Be Days Before Cities Dry Out
(Paducah, KY) -- It could be days before southern Illinois dries out after record breaking rains.
The National Weather Service says some spots south of I-70 have seen ten-inches of rain since early Tuesday morning.
All of that water has sent rivers and streams out of their banks.
Forecasters say every river but the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers can be expected to swell by the end of the week.
Rescue crews in Mt. Vwernon have already had to pull drivers from stranded cars in high water.
Other roads across the region are closed.
Report from southern Illinois paint a wet, and messy picture.
Police are telling some people to stay home if they can, but keep a close eye on basements and back yards.
Some people say its the worst flooding in southern Illinois in 15 years.
The same storm is blamed for floods and severe weather in a half dozen states.
Forecasters say similar heavy rains are responsible for deaths in Missouri.
Showers arent expected to last much longer, but the rain already on the ground will cause problems for a while.
