EVANSVILLE - An Indiana State Board of Accounts audit finds the city of Evansville failed to properly reconcile the city's books in 2011 under the previous administration. Now, fingers are being pointed as the council tries to figure out what happened and how to prevent it from happening again.
The city points to the purchase of new accounting software back in 2011 as part of the problem. But the audit found, in addition to the software, improper accounting and oversight also contributed to the issues now facing the city.
Monday, members of the city council heard testimony from department heads demanding an explanation.
The council members voiced concerns about not being informed sooner of the issue.
Finance chair John Friend tells Eyewitness News the council plans to hire a private consultant as its investigation continues.
At this time, no foul play is suspected. It appears to be poor bookkeeping and not criminal activity.
