Fire Breaks Out at Schnute Apartments in Evansville

By: Chris Veech
Updated: October 19, 2012

At least five people have been taken to area hospitals following an apartment fire in Evansville tonight. It happened at Schnute Apartments on W. Franklin St. just after 6 p.m. The building had been evacuated for more than an hour but, we're told those residents have now been allowed to go back to their apartments.

Fire officials say their experience with the grandview towers fire helped them deal with tonight's situation.

"We're using about the same strategy," said District Chief Dan Grimm, "and we're using the same methods as we did with grandview. So, you can always learn how to do things a little bit better, and we fine tune some of our tactics here in this building. And I believe that was one reaseon we got everybody evacuated so quickly."

No word yet on the condition of the five hospitalized. It's believed the fire started in a second floor laundry room.
