Indianas property tax bill passed a week ago Friday, but what does that mean for taxpayers? In a town hall meeting at Ivy Tech this afternoon, thats exactly what taxpayers and officials went to find out. It was more than the average citizen asking questions about property taxes. It was elected officials, like Township Assessor, Daphne Robinson, who needed some answers. "I just wanted a general understanding of this bill and how it affects tax payers." Republican House Leader, Brian Bosma says this was one of most complex bills hes seen in his 22 years in the general assembly and says, "I think we got it right." Four main issues, he says, are solved in the 600 page property tax bill. Immediate tax relief, a permanent tax cap, putting controls on local spending, and finally giving voters a say on how property taxes are spent. Bosma calls it a home run for taxpayers, but Robinson, who was not in favor of the bill from the beginning is still unsure. "I think in the long run the tax payers are going to be paying more." Bosma and Representative Suzanne Crouch say this will only benefit taxpayers, as well as the state as a whole. Representatives also touched on the difficulty they had dealing with Indianas assessment process. For those who still have questions, crouch says contact her or other state representatives.
