A Holiday Tradition Turned to Ashes

The clanking, clanging, scraping and screeching are haunting sounds for Donnie Greenwell.

"We did ship out a lot of popcorn in gift canisters, several thousand every Christmas, but none this year," Greenwell said.

There will be no Christmas tins, no hustle and bustle of holiday sales at Uncle Mark's Popcorn.

It's the business his father started but the business Greenwell built. It was taken away the night of the May 30th fire.

"Most of what I lost is the love of the company," Greenwell said. "I worked hard at it for many years and thought I did a pretty good job at it. I got a lot of compliments on the product."

There will be no compliments this year, only choruses and scorched reminders.

The holidays provide time to give thanks for what we have and remind us of what we don't.

"The people who are most sincere are those who went through a terrible ordeal themselves," Greenwell said. "If you haven't gone through that kind of experience they don't know what it's like."

This holiday season, instead of running a business, Greenwell will begin erasing it. But much like it's namesake, the business will always remain a part of him.

"I'll miss the business, I'll miss it tremendously," Greenwell said. "But I haven't had a Christmas off since 1983 so maybe I'll get off this Christmas."
