After Roy Lee Ward filed an appeal with the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals to stay his execution Monday, we're told an automatic stay was granted.
Ward was sentenced to die for the 2001 death of Stacy Payne. Police say he broke into Payne's house near Dale, sexually assaulted the teenager, then killed her.
Ward was scheduled to be executed next Tuesday, December 11th, in Michigan City.
It's not yet clear when a new execution date will be set.
