Power is finally restored after an overturned tanker truck left hundreds of people in Poseyville without power for nearly 12 hours. The accident happened around 9 a.m. Monday on Highway 165 -- just north of Poseyville.

Crews had to close the highway because gas leaked out of the tanker and spilled into a nearby ditch. The tanker also clipped a utility pole-- cutting off power to most of Poseyville-- including schools in the area. Residents tell Eyewitness News the town's power was restored around 9 o'clock Monday night.

Earlier in the evening, John Webb and dozens of other residents warmed up at the town fire station. Volunteers turned the firehouse into a shelter and invited residents for warm food and drinks. "Since I've been down here I've had chili, and hot chocolate and crackers -- they've treated me royally," said Webb. "I'm livin' better than I would at home -- that's what I told them anyhow."

Webb sat at a table next to a long-time friend, sharing stories and chatting about the power outage. He said  it was nice to have a warm place to sit among friends. "I didn't suffer very much," said Webb. "It's nice to have friends that'll see aboutcha."

Stan Forzley cranked the heat in his car, parked in his driveway, after his house dropped to a frigid 50-degrees. "We have an all electric home so that helps. You know, just, total shutdown," said Forzley. He and his wife later left town to beat the cold. "We're going to Evansville to eat. Hopefully you have power there," said Forzley.

Streets normally lit by an inviting glow sat in darkness most of the day Monday. Parking lots of businesses, normally filled with customers, remained empty. Many stores across town displayed signs stating they were closed due to the power outage. "I've never seen an outage like this. I've never seen this whole town out like it is now," said Webb. "That adds a burden on a lot of people."
