The award honors projects across the Midwest including Indiana and Illinois. The project was built to fix the problem of the city's combined sewer and stormwater system overflowing into local waterways during heavy rains. During heavy rains, the system pumps overflow to a 5 million-gallon storage tank and then the 27-acre constructed wetland for treatment. The project cost $23.8 million, as well as saving the city over a $1.6 million in annual operations and maintenance.
