In the last five years, a state-wide Kentucky school safety program has been losing money. And in light of the mass shooting in Connecticut, many lawmakers say that must change.

The Safe Schools Program funding went from almost $10.5 million to less than half of that amount this year. The loss has caused the Kentucky Center for School Safety to look for other means of funding.

"I believe that the school in Newtown, Connecticut was safe," said Governor Steve Beshear, "but the fellow shot the window out and got in. And so I don't know if there's any answer that will always prevent something like that, but we got to make sure our schools are as safe as possible. If we need to, we will put some money into school safety because obviously that's a high priority."

Governor Beshear is asking all schools to review its safety plans and promises to talk about school safety funding in the 2014 budget. Beshear is also asking for a moment of silence this Friday at 9:30 a.m. in honor of those killed at Sandy Hook Elementary.
