Keeping kids safe at school.  That's what Evansville educators, city officials, and police officers are discussing in the wake of the Newtown, Connecticut shootings.

A long-term discussion is underway in looking for solutions to keeping kids safe at school.  But it won't be as simple as just keeping dangerous people out of the halls.

Their steps include sharing security plans, performing safety reassessments at all schools, and getting funding for more security measures and programs.

"We want to make sure there's no stone unturned with the police departments, with the first responders," says Neil Saunders of Evansville Day School.

But they're also looking at other issues, including prevention and mental health.

"You have to look at the much bigger picture, which is identifying all these things that lead up to these events and what can be done to intervene, to give someone the mental help they need," says Sgt. Jason Cullum of the Evansville Police Dept.

There are also plans at the state level.  Incoming Indiana Governor Mike Pence and Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear are also asking for reviews of safety procedures at all schools.
