This year's United Way fundraising effort is barreling toward its goal, but charity officials hope the community will help them bridge the gap. The United Way, which turned 90 this year, has raised 81 percent of its $4.25 million goal. Officials say they are still waiting for several companies to report their results. The campaign kicked off September 7, with a jumpstart of over $1 million.

"I think it's important to donate," said Carol Braden-Clarke of United Way, "because it is a network of services in our community that look not just meeting people's immediate needs, but look at long term solutions to community issues."

United Way officials say the contributors who gave last year and this year, actually gave four percent more this year.
