Gibson County roads are finally thawing out after blizzard conditions left many streets slick and impassable. The winter blast and dangerous road conditions thrust the county into a state of emergency early last week. County commissioners lifted the emergency declaration Saturday as roads started to improve.

One woman tells Eyewitness News Wednesday was the first day she was able to get out of her house after she was snowed in last week. Most roads are now clear -- but there are still some trouble spots, particularly gravel country roads.

Nonetheless, residents say they're pleased to be on the road again. "I'm just glad things are improving and thanks to all the the workers that were out there. I know that interfered with their holiday and their time with their family and friends, so we do appreciate it," says Patti Fraker. Fraker, a Fort Branch resident, says she and her family were snowed in for two days after the storm.

Road crews certainly had a lengthy job at hand. Gibson County has around 1200 miles of county roads, which is significantly more than most counties in the Hoosier state.
