Flooding in Kentucky

News Release: From: The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Flooding continues across parts of Kentucky Motorists urged to be alert for rising water FRANKFORT, Ky. ­— The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is cautioning motorists to be on alert for rising water as flooding continues in parts of the state on Friday. “Our crews across the state are on alert for rising water and will respond to help ensure motorists are guided away from potentially dangerous areas,” said Transportation Secretary Joe Prather. When flooding occurs, road crews work to close affected roads and detour traffic. Crews use barriers and signage to notify motorists. In addition to county crews, the Transportation Cabinet uses information from its Safe Patrol units for an accurate and timely account of conditions. The National Weather Service says 3 to 5 inches of rain fell overnight in Kentucky. Rain is expected to end in the western parts of the Ohio River Valley today as this weather maker tracks to the east. In central Kentucky, the intensity of the rainfall is expected to decrease by mid morning with 1 to 2 inches of additional precipitation possible. Heavy rains are still expected for parts of eastern Kentucky. “We ask that motorists be especially attentive to the threat of rising water throughout Kentucky,” said Prather. “Any time water covers the roadway, there is potential for disaster.” Motorists should never drive through flowing water across a roadway. The fast currents of flooding water can easily carry a vehicle off the road. Motorists who encounter a flooded highway should report it to local law enforcement.
