The plan includes nearly two dozen specific executive actions. Many of which are a direct response to last month's deadly shootings in Connecticut.
During the news conference, President Obama outlined three of the major objectives in the $500 million plan.
- Require a universal background check for anyone wanting to purchase a gun
- Congress should restore a ban on military style assault weapons and limit magazine clips to 10 rounds of ammunition.
- Congress needs to help rather than hinder law enforcement to crack down on gun violence; and put more police back on the streets.
