A wintry mix of ice and sleet closed many Western Kentucky schools Wednesday, but not everyone agrees with those decisions. All nine Western Kentucky counties in our viewing area had a closing or a delay, but some areas were harder hit than others. Henderson County is one of a handful of Western Kentucky counties that had their first school closures of the year, but some here say today wasn't that bad and school should've went on as planned. These are the roads in Henderson Wednesday morning that would usually be filled with buses and cars heading to school. Amber Harrison chooses her two feet, but had no idea today was a day to sleep in. A senior here at Henderson County High, Harrison says Wednesday should've been a normal school day, "The roads aren't that bad, I think it should be open." Henderson County Superintendent Dr. Thomas Richey stands by the decision to close, saying his crews checked the roads multiple times Tuesday night. "Gravel roads that of course fills up with water and that freezes, the bus slides and it's just a very dangerous situation so our philosophy has always been we're going to air on the side of safety so that's what we did." But Harrison says she walks to school and if she didn't have any problems other should be okay as well. "That's not the naysayers position, as the Superintendent of schools, I'm accountable to the Board, our primary objective is safety of students at all times you can't just close one school because of certain sections of the roads because we have a transportation system" says Richey. A system Richey says would've faced dangers not so much on the main roads but secondary ones. For Harrison she's making a U-turn, and plans to check a few times the next time she heads out the door. School officials are continuing to monitor the weather to determine if more closings are needed, or course we're taking care of you, your Weather Authority will continue to have the very latest.
