The former treasurer of the German Township Fire Department has now been charged for her alleged crimes.
43 year old Susan Wargel of Mt. Vernon is facing one count of forgery and four counts of filing false income tax returns.
Wargel resigned from the department last September after the fire chief questioned her about missing money.
She allegedly forged the signature of a fire department board member on fire department checks, totaling about $263,000.
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Department investigated Wargel with the help of the IRS and the U.S. Secret Service.
