An early morning fire leaves a Henderson family without a place to live and the frigid temperatures caused some issues battling the flames. Henderson Fire Department was called out to a fire in the 1600 block of Old Madsionville Road, which is off Highway 60 West, just before two Tuesday this morning. Officials say flames were coming from the attic, and with temperatures this morning around 12 degrees, there were some obstacles for officials to overcome. Firefighters have a routine...arrive, extinguish and secure. But we're experiencing the coldest weather in two years here in the tri-state and that can add problems for these men and women. "When it's this cold, its tough to fight the fires in it, as you can see in the road, it freezes immediately so it makes hazardous conditions for the firefighters to try and work in, slipping on the ice." says Henderson Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Long. The water used to put out the flames turned quickly to ice, and salt trucks were on hand, trying to get the roads back to normal. Another obstacle, the nearest fire hydrant is about three blocks away. "I want to thank them for you know, taking care of the family and watching my house." Michele Hargis lives next door and was really concerned for the family being out in the cold as the house continued to burn. "I was just worried about them, making sure they kids were okay and they were doing good, they were in the back of the car," Hargis says. Long says the family is staying with relatives. As for the ice and cold air, firefighters say it's a tough and dangerous battle to maintain safety. Officials say the fire doesn't look suspicious, but the cause remains under investigation.
