When it comes to trash, crews usually take it away. But on Wednesday, they're leaving things behind.

Steven Long was happy to introduce himself to his new 96 gallon friends.

"I think they're really good," said Long. "They're 100 percent better than the regular trash cans and it makes it a lot easier."

And that's the point.

Two by two, city crews made their rounds dropping off the new trash and recycling carts. It's the latest installment in the city's major overhaul of trash services.

Picking up trash isn't exactly a clean business but it's getting there.

"I'm so glad they've got a serial number so we know our own cart," said Doris Unsel. "We can take care of it and it will keep the neighborhood a lot neater and cleaner."

Cleanliness is one thing. Convenience and quickness are another. City officials say the streamlined automated service will accomplish all three. Along with the new carts will come new trucks with automated arms.

"I have children in Colorado and they have similar kinds so I'm acquainted with them," said Unsel. "I'm just thrilled to death."

Any change comes with adjustments, however. To clean up any curbside confusion, city leaders are talking trash at the Traveling City Hall meeting Wednesday night. But in the meantime, some neighbors are just happy with their new 96 gallon bundles of joy.

Even if it is a trash can.

City officials say everyone should have their new carts by March. The new trucks should be operational by then, as well.

Comments

At least the trash men don't seem so eager to tear these up like they do privately owned waste cans.
