Update: Posey County residents were finally allowed to cast their votes Tuesday. Thats after at least five residents were turned away from the polls Monday. The Posey County Clerk said there wasnt a Republican representative at the courthouse. And by Indiana law, no vote can be cast without both parties on hand. Tuesday morning, though, the problems were solved when a representative for the Republican party showed up. Reported 4/7/08 Some Posey county voters are being turned away from the polls. They wanted to take advantage of early voting, but the countys missing a republican representative at the courthouse. A disappointed Sylvia Barnes leaves the courthouse for the second time in one day. Both times she was told, she cant cast her vote. According to county clerk, Donna Butler, shes had to turn all early voters away. "By law you have to have a republican and democratic party in office for someone to vote." And for whatever reason the republican representative chose not to show up. "Its been very hard this morning." Chairman of the Posey county republican party, George Postletheweight tells us hes been trying to get someone to the office. Hes called 35 to 40 people, but all declined, leaving Posey county residents unsatisfied. Butlers only solution is giving voters absentee applications, she says shes frustrated having to turn voters away and says theres no telling how long this will go on. "It will effect the primaries here. Are people gonna get frustrated and not vote?" Residents say nothing should get in the way of their right to vote, and hope Postletheweight gets a republican in the office soon.
