Could you find Macedonia on a world map? The small European nation gained its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, now its teachers are learning about democracy right here in Evansville. Several Macedonian teachers are participating in an educator exchange as part of the "Deliberating in Democracy" program. Theyve been touring the state and made several stops in Evansville, including this one at North High School. The teachers say what they experience here will help their kids back home, as they teach them how to respect different opinions and thoughts.
North High School students werent shy about asking the visitors questions about life in Macedonia, but they feel like American teens may not appreciate how good they really have it.
"Deliberating in Democracy" is a program run by Indiana University. Its aim is to get people from different countries speaking face to face about democratic principles, especially freedom of speech.
