Mints Help Fend Off Cavities (Chicago, IL) -- Theres sweet news for candy lovers. A new study shows a special cavity-fighting candy is effective in keeping teeth healthy. The study finds Venezuelan children who ate BasicMints, a product designed to mimic a component in human saliva that neutralizes acids in the mouth, had 62 percent fewer cavities than kids who only brushed their teeth regularly. Instead of temporarily increasing the flow of saliva in the mouth, like with sugarless gum, the mints actually neutralize the acids that cause cavities. Ortek Therapeutics, which produces the mints, will seek FDA approval to being testing the product in the U.S. by the end of the year. (Copyright 2008 by Newsroom Solutions) RNS-04-09-08 0301CDT
