Could changes be coming to Evansville's spay/neuter laws?

That's what animal control and city officials are starting to discuss.  Todd Robertson of the City of Evansville says talks are in the early stages and no proposed changes have been made.  But some say the rules need to be toughened.  Kendall Paul of the Vanderburgh Humane Society says something needs to be done, especially since Evansville has an overpopulation problems because not everyone is getting their dog or cat fixed.

"Anytime you have perfectly healthy, wonderful animals, that can be fantastic pets, that are having to be euthanized, that's going to be a problem," she says.

Hamilton County, Indiana changed their laws in 2006.  Deputy Tom Rogers of the Hamilton Co. Sheriff's Office says the changes have lowered the number of unwanted animals taken to local shelters.

"We're dropping an average of 200 a year instead of climbing," he says.  "Had the policy not been in effect, we would've probably grown by 400 animals a year."

Robertson also says it could be more than a year before any changes to spay/neuter laws are proposed.
