10 Arrested During Peabody Coal Protest

By: Michael C. Fehn

Hundreds gathered to protest the bankruptcy proceedings of Patriot Coal in St. Louis on Wednesday, and 10 of them are waking up behind bars.

The protesters say the bankruptcy jeopardizes pension and health care benefits for some 20-thousand retirees and dependents.

The United Mine Workers of America led the protest outside of the Saint Louis headquarters of Peabody Energy, one of the nation's largest coal companies, and one of the companies the union accuses of orchestrating business deals that bankrupted Patriot Coal.

About one thousand people took part in the protest, including over 50 workers from the Tri-State.  The 10 were arrested after sitting in the street in front of Peabody's headquarters.
