An Evansville man accused of killing a homeless man walks free -- after a jury finds him not guilty. William Hurt was on trial for murder, robbery and obstruction of justice in connection with the June 2012 death of Marcus Golike. Hurt is the foster child of Golike's adopted sister.
After more than three days of testimony and nearly eleven hours of deliberation -- a jury found hurt not guilty of murder or robbery, but remains hung on the obstruction of justice charge. Hurt was allowed to leave jail late Monday night after posting $5,000 bond.
Golike's loved ones say they're still trying to come to terms with the verdict. "Obviously this verdict has crushed them," says Anthony Golike, the victim's brother. Golike's family says the verdict has left them wondering if their loved one will ever get justice. They worry his death was overlooked because he was homeless.
"Mark was homeless by choice so that he could help more people," explains Golike. "If there were more homeless people out there doing what Mark did, I would think the world would be a much better place. He did nothing out of selfishness -- I guess you can say until it hurt."
Hurt's family did not comment on the verdict. A hearing will be held on the remaining obstruction of justice charge in two weeks. If convicted, that charge could carry a sentence of 6 months to 3 years.
