Federal, State Agents Raid Evansville Clinic

Federal and state agents raided the Med First Pain Management Clinic on Washington Avenue for several hours on Tuesday. The raid started with a search warrant around ten in the morning.

One by one, dozens of patients showed up for their appointments only to be turned away. Not only did that leave  many patients without their medications, but it also left many with an uneasy feeling.

The 'open' sign hanging in the door of Med First proved to be misleading Tuesday.

Inside the pain management clinic was a group of agents from the DEA and Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) of the Indiana Attorney General's Office.

Not only did the joint raid result in agents seizing boxes and boxes of paperwork but it also left patients concerned and confused.

"What the hell is going on," said Jacqueline Truitt, a patient of Med First. "It makes me a little worried, yes."

Many patients walked through the front door for their appointments only to find a federal agent guarding the way. The agents told them to re-schedule their appointments. Left to sit and wait, the news tested the patience of these patients.

"I've been on disability for about 12 years and have had 16 operations and [Med First] gives me the pain medication I need to live a comfortable life," said one patient. "If I don't, I'll be going through withdrawals."

Federal authorities would not comment on the raid other than confirming the raid did, in fact, happen.

Patient after patient eventually figured that out.

Med First employs four nurse practitioners and a full time physician, Dr. Diane Crowley.

"She seems like a real nice woman," said Billy Travis. "I don't think she did anything knowingly."

The joint investigation will determine what -- if anything -- was going on behind the glass doors at Med First. In the meantime, these patients hope the next time they come for an appointment an armed guard won't be the first thing they see.

As for the point and purpose of the raid, federal officials would not elaborate. However, a spokesperson for US Attorney Joe Hogsett says the results of the investigation will be released in the near future.

i've been seeing dr crowley at med 1st for about 3 yrs or so and i've never seen or heard of anything suspicious happening there. i know dr crowley is a stickler to the rules, especially medicaid. i truly believe that she and her staff do follow the laws mandated for that type of clinic. i think that a former patient who didn't follow the rules or maybe flunked a drug test is trying to cause trouble. i have multiple health problems that leave me with chronic pain...it's hard enough to live with it when i have pain meds it would be unbearable without any. just think of how bad it hurts if you stub your toe or slam a door on your finger...now imagine feeling that pain magnified 10x all day EVERY SINGLE DAY OF YOUR LIFE! that should give a little taste of what me and many others try to live with 24/7.

I am a patient of Dr Crowleys at med 1st. I was in a serious motorcycle accident about 8 months ago. I suffered several broken ribs and severe spinal injury. Med 1st was.the only pain mgmt. That would accept me because I had no medical insurance. I can honestly say the med 1st staff is completely honest and forthcoming with regard to patient regulations. I have known patients to be discharged for not following program rules. Also, I will note, for those who don't deal with chronic pain, a life of pain and agony is not a life worth having. I am aware there nah be those who scam the staff for drugs, but they serve a much greater purpose. To help those of us that actually need it. It sounds like a former patient who could not follow the drug/alcohol abstinence regulations cried fowl once they were discharged.
