Woman Pleads Guilty to Stealing From A Charity

Updated: March 4, 2013
A woman admits ripping off an Evansville charity for more than $280,000.
Susan Hilgeman pleaded guilty to forgery and to conspiracy to commit theft.  She will be sentenced April 24th.
Hilgeman admitted while she and her mother were treasurers of the Eastern Star organization, they wrote checks to themselves from the charity's account.  The thefts took place over a several year period.
Most of the money they are accused of stealing came from the estate of Daisy Hardy.  Hardy died in 2004 when her home on Lincoln Avenue exploded.  She left $200,000 to the charity in her will.
Hilgeman's mother, Marille Garrison is scheduled to go to trial in July.
