The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has awarded the job to Spartan Contracting, LLC, out of Ohio.
Spartan submitted the successful bid for painting and cleaning the bridge. At $10,070,000, the contract is about ten million dollars less than engineers had first predicted.
The contract does not allow the bridge to be closed to traffic until after May 12th for work on the main truss spans, however, the contractor can start working on the approach spans as soon as weather permits.
KTC Spokesperson, Keith Todd said, "There are certain temperature requirements for painting that would likely prohibit much activity on the approach spans until daytime temperatures are up in the 50's on a regular basis." That would likely mean work could start under the approach spans sometime in the next month."
Spartan is expected to hold off on closing the bridge until after the International Bar-B-Que Festival in May. The deadline for completing the first season of work is Nov. 15th.
