Group of Illinois Students Trying to Bring Mascot Back

By: Chris Veech
Updated: March 5, 2013
It's been six years since Chief Illiniwek last danced at the University of Illinois. But a student group puts an item on a campus election ballot drumming up support to make the American Indian mascot the official symbol of the campus. The students hope to block the school's new effort to create a new mascot. The chancellor says she'll watch the results, but insists the chief mascot isn't coming back. The university shelved the mascot in 2007 under threat of NCAA sanctions.
