United Way Announces Spring Food Drive Plans

It may not feel like it or look like it, but the United Way of Southwestern Indiana has Spring in mind. The non-profit announces plans today for the 2013 Spring into Caring Food Drive. In a twist this year, the United Way along with the Tri-State Food Bank are partnering with the National Association of Letter Carriers. The Letter Carriers already have a "Stamp Out Hunger" campaign so the organizations decided to combine the two events scheduled for early May. The food drive aims to bring awareness to the issue of hunger in the area. The United Way received 6,600 calls for food assistance last year.
"We decided after hearing those calls the number of people that are calling in needing food are just not making ends meat to do something more about it. And by having this concentrated effort of a more week-long food drive, we feel like we can make a real tangible difference."
United Way officials estimate 36,000 people across Vanderburgh, Warrick, and Spencer Counties do not have enough to eat. The food drive is scheduled for the week of May 6.
