On the "eve" of the anniversary of the Virginia tech tragedy, USI students are signing up for a new emergency alert system.
The rave alert system sends messages to students and faculty in the event of an emergency.
Tuesday the campus held a safety sign-up blitz to get more students signed up to receive the messages on cellphones.
University officials say, when snow canceled classes in January, they got to test their system for the first time.
They say it worked well and believe it would work well in a blackout or a catastrophic event.
So far more than three-thousand faculty and staff members have signed up.
