A new roundabout in Owensboro won't be done for about a year, but residents who work near the site hope it makes the area safer.

The new roundabout will be at the intersection of Kentucky 56 and Kentucky 81.  KYTC says about 13,000 drivers go through that intersection each day.  Construction was scheduled to start Tuesday.  Robert Kuegel works at Golfland USA, which borders the current intersection.  He says there have been many accidents there over the years.

"I know in the earlier days, when they were running coal through here, the coal trucks would usually run off the road when cars would pull out in front of them, and a load of coal would get dumped," he says.

Kuegel says while he has a few concerns about construction and drivers getting used to the roundabout, he thinks it will help in the long run.

"I think it'll improve the situation," Kuegel adds.

Wes Roberts is Administrative Pastor at Bellevue Baptist Church.  He hopes the improved intersection will bring more businesses to West Owensboro.

"We just hope that, maybe, it will help with some retail or some other things develop in this area," he says.  "Whether it will or not, I don't know."

KYTC says this will be only the fifth one on a Kentucky highway.
