New Bill on Kentucky High School Dropout Age Passes

By: Chris Veech
Updated: March 13, 2013
A new bill has passed in Kentucky that will eventually raise the high school dropout age to 18. Right now, high schoolers can choose to drop out of school at the age of 16. Under the new law, school districts will be able to choose whether to increase the dropout age. After 55 percent of school districts sign on, it would be required statewide.

Although Jefferson County is planning to vote within two weeks, most schools we spoke to in western Kentucky are still in the planning stages. Both Henderson County and Owensboro schools are planning to add a vote to a school board meeting within the next few months. If the school board votes to raise the dropout age, it will most likely be implemented during the next school year.
