Crews are still on the scene of an early morning fire that destroyed much of an Owensboro Church Monday morning.

The fire at First Christian Church broke out around 3:00a.m.

Homes nearby had to be evacuated due to the danger of heavy smoke, and the possibility of the church's steeple collapsing.

About 70 homes have been without power for most of the day, and nearby streets from 5th to 8th remain closed.

As word of the fire spread, church members started arriving to take a look at what's left of the building.

Firefighters tell us crews will likely stay at the church for 24 hours as flames continue to rise.  Right now, investigators say its likely the fire was sparked by lightning from overnight storms.
