Pastors and members of First Christian Church are starting to pick up the pieces after a fire destroyed their house of worship Monday morning.

People were still at the scene Tuesday, looking at what remained of the church.  Some members, like Tim McGlothlin, who volunteered in some of the church's programs, say the fire's left him devastated.

"Makes me want to cry, because it's so beautiful inside," he says.  "The church was so beautiful."

Other area churches say they know how tough it is to rebuild.  Dr. James Byrd of Third Baptist Church says it took his church at least three years to get back to normal after a tornado damaged their building several years ago.  Byrd believes First Christian will be able to recover from the fire.

"They're great people, and it's a great congregation, and they'll do well," he says.

Owensboro fire investigators say while they haven't determined the actual cause yet, they say they've gotten information leading them to believe lightning started the fire.  The area around the church was still blocked off as of Tuesday afternoon and may stay that way until Wednesday.
