Indiana Summary --- Cool, Then Warmer Weather For Indiana This Week Weather gets cooler than what we have felt last week, but then warming again this week. Highs are to be in the low to mid 50s, then moving back up into the 60s and mid 70s by the weekend. Theres also rain in the forecast, but no severe storms are in the picture now. --- Ex-Teller Pleads Guilty To Stealing Millions (New Albany) -- A former head teller of the Obelisk Federal Credit Union in Floyd County pleaded guilty in District Court last week. Patricia Sherman was sentenced to eight years and one month in federal prison for stealing more than seven-million dollars. She was also sentenced to five years of supervised release and ordered to repay the entire amount that she admitted to taking from the credit union. The "Courier Journal" reports that Sherman offered no explanation for the theft. --- Woman Arrested After High-Speed Chase (Indianapolis) -- Indianapolis Metropolitan Police arrested a woman following a high-speed chase during the weekend. Police say the chase covered streets on the near southeast side after her car struck a police officer. Authorities say the chase began around 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the 78-hundred block of Shelbyville Road when police tried to serve a warrant on the woman, identified as Ingen Fishman. Authorities say officers had the house surrounded when the suspect backed out of her garage and struck an officer. The officer was not seriously hurt. Police finally stopped the car as Southeastern Avenue and Washington Street. Detectives say Fishman started to flee on foot but was then apprehended by a canine officer. She was taken to the hospital. Investigators say Fishman may have been on drugs during the case. Fishman faces numerous charges that include battery on a police officer. --- Here Are The Latest Winning Numbers From The Hoosier Lottery Daily Three-Evening: 7-2-5; Daily Four-Evening: 3-0-1-1; Lucky Five-Evening: 8-10-22-23-35. Kentucky Summary (Winchester, KY) -- A control burn in Clark County turned into a smoky fire that could be seen for miles. The Sunday fire at the old Rockwell International plant near I-64. One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation. (Lexington, KY) -- Twenty-four-year-old Laine Ashker remains hospitalized, at last report in critical but stable condition. Ashker was injured in a fall at the Rolex Three-Day Event at the Kentucky Horse Park. Frodo Braggins, a 13-year-old thoroughbred, was euthanized. Another horse, The Quiet Man, also injured at the Rolex had to be euthanized. (Frankfort, KY) -- A bill to increase mortgage protections for Kentuckians will become law this week. Governor Steve Beshear is signing House Bill 552 into law today. The bill designed to protect consumers and reduce fraud. The bill will affect the operations of the Office of Financial Institutions, the government entity that regulates the mortgage industry in Kentucky. (Frankfort, KY) -- The Council on Postsecondary Education can add Kentucky State University to the list of Kentucky public universities seeking tuition increases. Kentucky State Regents have approved an eight percent increase in tuition and a 57-dollar per semester hike in board. (Bowling Green, KY) -- Thursday marks the days that Israel remembers the Holcaust as do may people around the world. The day will be observed with a special memorial service at the Guthrie Bell Tower on the Western Kentucky University campus. The memorial is being organized by the Jewish Student Union, and other Jewish groups. (Ashland, KY) -- A man who spent many years at the Ashland Daily Independent is being remembered this week. Paul W. Sierer has died. He retired in 1989 after serving the paper in many roles from reporter to managing editor in a career at the Ashland paper that began in 1954. The World War Two veteran grew up in Ironton, Ohio and graduated from Marshal University. Sierer was 81. (Frankfort, KY) -- State workers are getting ready to serve a very big breakfast. The annual Governors Derby Day breakfast is Saturday on the grounds of the Capitol. Those attending are expected to consumer two-thousand pounds of country ham, 15-thousand biscuits, 25-thousand eggs, 15-thousand servings of cheese grits, and 60 bushels of apples and countless gallons of coffee and juice. The free breakfast begins at 7 a.m. Illinois Summary --- Negligent Driving Citation For Driver In CTA Crash (Chicago) -- The driver whose semi crashed into the CTA Red Lines Cermak-Chinatown station during rush hour Friday afternoon is now cited for negligent driving. Chicago police say their investigation is ongoing, and 64-year-old Donald Wells of Metamora, Michigan may face further charges. But for now, he is expected to be released from custody. Two Chicago women were killed and 21 more victims were hospitalized after the rush hour accident. Authorities are reviewing surveillance tapes to try and determine the accidents cause. --- Former Obama Pastor Delivers Fiery Oration In Detroit (Detroit, MI) -- Barack Obamas former pastor is making no apologies for his controversial statements, and his right to state them. Reverend Jeremiah Wright was the keynote speaker at the NAACPs Freedom Fund Dinner at Detroits Cobo Center Sunday night. Wright took a swipe at the media for linking him to the presidential race. He also sought to correct those who called his sermons "divisive" and offered the word "descriptive" as a more accurate description of his sermons. He says he describes the conditions of this country and that conditions divide, not his description of them. In an interview with PBS Bill Moyers that aired last Friday, Wright said media organizations that circulated video snippets of his sermons wanted to paint him as, quote, "un-American" or "some sort of fanatic" to bring down Obama. Wright said people who hear his remarks fully understand him "perfectly." --- Fewer Shootings On Chicago Streets This Weekend (Chicago) -- Mayor Daleys strong words and the Chicago Police Departments extra patrols appear to have slowed violence on the citys streets, at least for now. Early numbers show only eleven shootings in the city this weekend. There were five homicides, but two of those were fatalities from Fridays semi crash into the Cermak-Chinatown CTA Red Line Station. Those tallies are a sharp drop from the weekend before, when 36 people were shot and seven killed. Mayor Daley held an emergency gun summit with police, school, and religious leaders on Friday. Chicago police also stepped up enforcement, including outdoor roll calls and other shows of force. --- Five Pulled From Burning Apartment Building (Chicago) -- Three people were injured and two more rescued from a fire at an apartment building in Chicagos South Shore neighborhood early this morning. A Chicago Fire Department spokesman says the fire broke out at about 2:00 in the second floor of the two-story brick building near East 81st Street and South Marquette Avenue. The victims suffered burns and smoke inhalation, and two were hospitalized in serious to critical condition. Officials say the building had working smoke detectors. Authorities are still working to figure out the cause. --- Summer Teen Job Levels Likely To Fall (Chicago) -- Teens who havent lined up that summer job yet should probably pick up applications as soon as school lets out today. The Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University predicts this summers teenage employment rate will fall to its lowest point ever. The previous low was set last year, at 34-point-five-percent nationwide. Only three states have been hit harder than Illinois, which saw summer employment numbers fall sixteen-percent between 2000 and 2005. Locally, a similar Northern Illinois University study calls the decline "troubling". --- Hundreds Turn Out To Honor Missing Plainfield Woman (Plainfield) -- Family, friends, and members of the Plainfield community turned out yesterday for a memorial walk in honor of Lisa Stebic. Wednesday will mark one year since the mother of two was last seen. Her mother, Judy Ruttenberg, says Lisa was a "remarkable gift" and will always be cherished. She also says the family has had a difficult time coping with Stebics disappearance. Plainfield police call Stebics husband Craig a "person of interest" and suspect foul play, but he denies any role in her disappearance. The two were finalizing a divorce. Proceeds from yesterdays event will benefit domestic violence services at Guardian Angel Community Services. --- Report: Mars, Buffett to Buy Wrigley Company (Chicago) -- One of Chicagos oldest and most powerful companies is apparently about to be sold. The "Wall Street Journal" reports Mars and Warren Buffetts Berkshire Hathaway are close to a deal to buy the Wrigley Company for more than 22-billion dollars. The transaction could be announced as early as today. The Wrigley family helped build Chicago, and its Michigan Avenue headquarters is one of the citys landmark structures. The company has been independent since its founding in the late 1800s by William Wrigley, Junior. Wrigley is most known for its many chewing gum brands, while Mars is the worlds largest chocolate maker. --- Son Of Immigration Activist Returns To Chicago For Events (Chicago) -- Nine-year-old Saul Arellano 1/81/8are-ee-AHN-oh3/83/8 returned yesterday to the West Side church he called home for a year while his mother claimed sanctuary from deportation. Immigration activist Elvira Arellano made national headlines with her refusal to leave Adalberto United Methodist Church through much of 2006 and 2007. She eventually left to attend an immigration rally in California, where she was arrested and deported to her native Mexico. Unlike his mother, Saul is an American citizen, but he moved to Mexico with her. His legal guardian in the United States, Emma Lozano, says Saul Arellano is back to attend immigration-reform events scheduled for later this week. Adalberto Methodist held a special service to honor the youngsters return. The church currently housed another woman, Flor Crisostomo 1/81/8cree-SOH-stuh-mo3/83/8, who also is claiming sanctuary from deportation. --- One Dead In Kennedy Crash (Chicago) -- One man is dead after an early morning accident on the Kennedy Expressway. State police say the crash happened about 2:15am on the outbound Kennedy near the Damen Avenue exit. Police say a semi was stopped on the right shoulder when an SUV crossed over and slammed into it. The driver of the SUV died at the scene, and the semis driver was uninjured. The victims name has not been released. Police re-opened most lanes of traffic at about 4:45. --- Cab Fares Increase Today (Chicago) -- The price of a cab ride in Chicago is now a bit higher. The new gas surcharge kicks in today, raising taxi fares by one dollar. The extra buck is added when the average gas price in the Chicago metro area hits $3.20 or higher for seven consecutive days. The average price has exceeded $3.20 since March 10th. Officials say the surcharge will be dropped if prices hit $2.70 or lower. Chicagos city council approved the price hike April 9th.
