A Dubois county war hero got the ultimate honor from his hometown. The Ferdinand Post Office was renamed in his honor. David Nord was the only soldier from the town who died in the Vietnam war. The day soldier David Nord was killed in Vietnam has long since passed, but his legacy in Ferdinand, Indiana will now live on forever. Congressman Baron Hill introduced a bill to congress less than a year ago to rename their post office after the late David Nord. "I was proud to go to congress but it was the community that made it happen." What used to be called the Ferdinand Post Office is now called the Staff Sergeant David L. Nord Post Office, which to family members, is a great honor. "Words cannot describe how I feel right now." "When I drive past the post office going to give me a lot more pride than Ive ever had in my life." The plaque was unveiled to a crowd of nearly 300, including Vietnam veterans who fought alongside Nord. They presented his son, who was born just months after his death, with a special plaque. The year was 1969. Nord earned awards, like the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Ever since his death, his brother, Dan, has treasured letters, pictures, and his brothers motorcycle for the past 40 years. "Its all the little things in a family that are important." But its the big things too, like having the post office named after his big brother that he will cherish forever.
