Indiana Summary --- Dry And Sunny On The Way To Indiana (Indianapolis) -- After lots of rain, dry and sunny conditions are on the way to Indiana. Temperatures are expected in the 60s today and low 70s Saturday. On Mothers Day, some rain could fall along with some sun and spring temperatures. Fans and drivers at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway are hoping for warm, dry and sunny for some running of the race cars after two days of wash-outs. --- Columbus Men Indicted For False Claims To Defense Department (Indianapolis) -- Two Columbus business owners are under indictment for submitting false reimbursement claims to the U.S. Defense Department. Michael Bennett and Jeremy Kittle allegedly helped service members present the forms to the Defense Finance and Accounting Services. Bennett and Kittle submitted the claims as rental furniture for service members at Camp Atterbury, according to the indictment. The pieces, with a combined value of over 100-thousand-dollars, were actually purchased. The federal crime carries a possible five years in prison. --- Father Charged In Accidental Fatal Shooting (Indianapolis) -- An Indianapolis father is charged with neglect in the accidental shooting of his daughter by one of her siblings. The charges filed against James Michael Booher on Thursday are in connection to the death of four-year-old Mikayla Booher. She was shot on Sunday by her four-year-old brother, who had gotten a hold of the mans weapon. There was no magazine in the gun, but one bullet in the chamber. Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi says the same boy fired Boohers gun eight months ago. Kentucky Summary (Greenup County, KY) -- The family of an eastern Kentucky soldier is mourning his loss today. The family of Army Specialist Jeremy Gullett says theyve been notified of his death in Afghanistan. 23-year-old Greenup County man was killed by a roadside bomb, he was deployed to Afghanistan in March. State military officials say they havent been informed of Specialist Gulletts passing. (Wurtland, KY) -- Hattie McConnell is offering a reward to find her sons killer. Over two-years ago 35-year-old Robert Sammons body was found stuffed in the trunk of his burned out car in rural Boyd County. Now his mother is able to post a five-thousand-dollar reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of her sons killer. The Kentucky State Police are able to put up an additional one-thousand-dollars from an arson information program. (Bowling Green, KY) -- Cigarette makers now have to make a special cigarette for Kentucky smokers. State law mandates that cigarettes sold in the state must be fire safe, made with special paper to self-extinguish. Law makers enacting the law as a way to help prevent accidental fire deaths among smokers. Some smokers are not pleased with their favorite brands now made with special paper. One smoker says the cigarettes keep going out without almost constant puffing, another says they taste like metal. The cigarettes made with the special paper have FSC initials on the pack. (Pikeville, KY) -- The Louisville based owners of the Days Inn hotel in Pikeville are donating the hotel to Pikeville College. Its the largest property donation ever received by the school. The school says it hopes to renovate the hotel and convert it to apartments for students and faculty. (Frankfort, KY) -- Governor Steve Beshear has appointed five members to the Kentucky Board of Elections. The five include Austin Moss of Hopkinsville, Dorothy Combs of Richmond, Stephen Neal of Louisville, Bridgitte Ramsey of Falmouth. The governor also appointed former Republican gubernatorial candidate, Paducah businessman Billy Harper. (Frankfort, KY) -- Kentucky State Police honoring various members of its organization and several private citizens, for bravery, meritorious service, achievement and professionalism. The top honor of "Trooper of the Year" goes to a detective assigned to the Pikeville Post. Eighteen-year KSP veteran Edward Crum. Detective Crum cited for his work as an investigator of crimes and for his work as an accident reconstruction specialist. (Shaker Village, KY) -- People who dine at the Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill may now have some adult liquid refreshment with their meal. Theyre now selling beer and wine and in the future probably stronger drink. Its possible because of voters who approved the alcohol sales as a way to increase overnight stays. Illinois Summary --- Aide To Kelly May Have Obtained Incriminating Tape (Chicago) -- As it appears the child pornography trial of singer R. Kelly will finally start today in a Chicago courtroom, there is word of a new development in the case. The "Chicago Sun-Times" reports an aide to R. Kelly is alleged to have paid off a woman to get her to return an incriminating sex videotape featuring the R-and-B singer. A judge was reportedly told about the incident in closed-door hearings last month. The woman is expected to testify she had a three-way sexual encounter with Kelly and an underage girl. Jury selection in the case is expected to begin today nearly six years after Kelly was indicted. Reporters from all over the world are expected to cover the trial. --- Murder Victims Family Sues Alleged Assailants (Chicago) -- A Lake Barrington woman and her late husband are now the subject of a lawsuit filed after a young man was allegedly killed so the husband could fake his own death and collect on a two-million-dollar life insurance policy. Denise Squire and her late husband, Ari, are accused of conspiring to murder Justin Newman in February so Ari could switch identities with him to make it look like Squire was the one who died. Ari Squire shot and killed himself after fleeing to Missouri. The lawsuit is filed against Denise Squire and the estate of Ari Squire on behalf of Justin Newmans estate and his family. --- Witnesses Say Strike Talk May Have Spurred 1981 Murder (Chicago) -- Bond is set at 500-thousand-dollars for a Naperville man accused of murdering an employee at his Chicago restaurant nearly 27 years ago. Fifty-six-year-old Michael Cosmano is charged with killing 29-year-old Milton Rodriguez in 1981 at a pizza parlor in the 19-hundred block of West Chicago Avenue. Police say a dispute regarding wages and employment conditions escalated and ended with Rodriguez being fatally shot. The "Chicago Sun-Times" reports witnesses didnt come forward for more than two decades, possibly because of rumors their boss was involved with organized crime. --- Facebook Agrees With Illinois, Other States To Make Site Safer (Chicago) -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan is joining her counterparts around the country in announcing that Facebook has agreed to make its web site safer for underage users. Facebook will be doing several things, including providing automatic safety messages when a child is in danger of giving personal information to an unknown adult and restricting the ability of users to change their listed ages. The deal is similar to one reached with MySpace in January. --- Lake Forest Man Charged After More Than 100 Guns Confiscated (Lake Forest) -- A 49-year-old commodities trader from Lake Forest faces multiple charges after state and federal agents seized at least 85 illegal guns during a raid on his home yesterday. Benjamin Stevens is charged with multiple felony counts of possessing a firearm without a Firearm Owners Identification card. More serious charges are possible pending tests on two 50-caliber machine guns and more than 50-thousand rounds of ammunition. --- Mayor Daley Wants Federal Money To Curb Gang Violence (Chicago) -- Mayor Daley says Chicago needs help from Washington to curb violence. The Mayor met with the Illinois congressional delegation yesterday as he seeks more money to curb gang violence. Mayor Daley says he has talked with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and FBI Director Robert Mueller to seek their support. Illinois Democratic Senator Richard Durbin says lawmakers have requested two and-a-half-million-dollars for anti-gang funds for Chicago from the Justice Department. --- North Suburban Woman Arrested After Prostitution Sting 1/81/8 note nature 3/83/8 (Waukegan) -- A Lake County woman faces multiple charges after police conducted a prostitution sting at her home. The Lake County Sheriffs Office says 51-year-old Robin OGrady was arrested at her residence in Deerfield Township Wednesday after a four-month investigation. OGrady has been released after posting bond. --- Grandy Jury Hears From Three More In Peterson Investigation (Will County) -- A Will County special grand jury continues to investigate the death of Drew Petersons third wife Kathleen Savio and the disappearance of his current wife Stacy Peterson. The "Chicago Tribune" reports three more witnesses appeared in court yesterday. Drew Peterson, a former Bolingbrook Police sergeant, has not been charged with any crime. --- Berwyn Teen Convicted For Killing Classmate A 14-year-old Berwyn boy will likely be behind bars until he is at least 21 after being convicted of killing a classmate. The boy, whose name has not been released, was convicted yesterday of stabbing 13-year-old Ricardo Hernandez in February, 2007 as the boys walked home from school. The boys apparently had an altercation at lunch that day. --- Arlington Heights Man Called "One-Man Crime Wave" (Arlington Heights) -- A "one-man crime wave" in the northwest suburbs is behind bars. The "Daily Herald" reports 31-year-old Arlington Heights resident Piotr Jaworowski has confessed to at least 17 armed robberies at gas stations, liquor stores and other places since last October. His robberies took place in Arlington Heights, Winnetka, Lake Zurich, Prospect Heights, Palatine, Wheeling, Mount Prospect and Buffalo Grove.
