Government Report: More Children Drowning In Pools and Hot Tubs (Washington, DC) -- The number of children who are drowning in swimming pools and hot tubs is edging upward. A new report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission says that on average, 283 children younger than five drowned annually between 2003 and 2005. Thats an increase of 16 from the three-year period beginning in 2002. The commissions acting chairman Nancy Nord says, quote, "That is not progress. We need to draw that number down." Nord says pools should have fences with self-latching gates around them in addition to alarms in case a child falls in. She says the most important tip is for parents and other adults to never lose sight of a child who is near water. (Copyright 2008 by Newsroom Solutions) RNS-05-22-08 0307CDT
