The Warrick County Council has approved the county assessors request for three full time employees. The new hires became necessary when a new state law eliminated township assessors in the states smaller counties. "Were eliminating 9 part time positions and two full time positions for me to ask for 3 full time positions" By taking over the township budgets, the county will gain 35-thousand, enough to cover the salary of one of the three requested positions. The other two transferred under the current budget, basically, a wash. "One full time position is the Boone Township Assessor, which her salary is covered until the end of the year, so thats actually not an additional request." The additional employees wont cost the county any more money, but it wont necessarily save it any either. But Wilder says there are other advantages. "My position has always been always had liability and responsibility held to county assessor however we never had control in the townships because they have independent elected officials." Some of those losing their jobs in the townships are now applying county positions. In Warrick, four of the nine are vying for the three spots Wilder is asking for. Not all county councils are approving additional help for assessors, but Wilder is hopeful and says either way the work will get done Because of its size, Ohio Township in Warrick County is the only one not losing its assessor. Voters in those areas will decide in November whether or not to merge with county government.
