Fast Food Business Takes Precautionary Step After Salmonella Scare
(Oak Brook) -- Officials at the Oak Brook-based McDonalds Corporation say it has temporarily removed tomatoes from its sandwiches in the United States.
They are calling it a preventive step after a recent outbreak of salmonella.
Since mid-April, 145 people in at least 16 states have been infected with the bacteria called Salmonella Saintpaul, which has been linked to raw tomatoes.
In Illinois, 17 cases have been diagnosed, but state health officials say its too soon to determine if the cases are connected to tomatoes.
McDonalds has taken tomatoes from their chicken sandwiches and Big N Tasty burgers.
The fast food firm has not detected salmonella bacteria in any of its tomato supplies.
