Hazleton, Indiana sits on the edge of the White River and could be one of the next Hoosier towns under water. The White River, here in Hazleton, currently sits at 27 feet, leaving these homes dry. But come Saturday, Fire Chief Mark Ellis says it could be a different story. "Its expected to raise 31 feet by zero one hundred hours on Saturday." The last time the town flooded was in 2005 when water levels hit 31.5 feet. Thats just under the record 31.65 feet set in 1937. If the river reaches the projected crest, Ellis says this sandbag levee and a water pump will save the town. "This is not our first time to do this but we try to get a little better each time." Since the last flood, a few things have changed. A 50,000 dollar DNR grant and money from FEMA allowed town officials to pack nine soft spots in the levee, and put in a new flood gate. Hazleton resident, Clayton Dame, says this time preparation is much easier. "We did a lot of the work last time, this time theyre doing it for us." They is the Indiana National Guard, sent by Governor Daniels to help the small town. By noon, this small group of soldiers laid nearly five thousand bags. "To actually help in your home state feels good." Ellis says homes sitting outside the levee may receive some flood damage, but for now, everyone on the inside, is in good shape.
