Several Counties Approved for Federal Assistance

The levee at Maysville in Daviess County failed Thursday morning, prompting another evacuation of areas northwest of Maysville and Washington. Sandbags are still being pre-positioned in the Hazleton area of Gibson County. Emergency crews are stationed there for support. A crest is forecasted at record flood level Saturday morning. Also, President Bush has approved the first eight counties for federal assistance, but none of the tri-state counties are included. They are Bartholomew, Hancock, Johnson, Marion, Monroe, Morgan, Vermillion and Vigo counties. Damage assessments for other counties are being conducted and submitted to the federal government as theyre completed. There are still several shelters in operation for evacuees.
