Fulton Avenue/Lloyd Expressway Interchange Design Finalized From the Mayor's Office: (EVANSVILLE, IN) – Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel is pleased to announce that the city has reached an agreement with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) on the design of the new interchange at Fulton Avenue and the Lloyd Expressway.  The Lloyd Expressway will go over Fulton Avenue at the interchange. A westbound off-ramp from the Lloyd to Fulton Avenue will be added. The existing Mary Street on-ramp will be closed permanently. Frontage roads will be used on each side of the Lloyd between Fulton and First Avenues. Standard on and off ramps will be built west of the intersection coming from the Pigeon Creek bridge. “I am pleased that the state listened to our vision about how this project will serve as a gateway into downtown by adding a west bound exit ramp from the Lloyd onto Fulton, and additional turning capacity heading west onto the Lloyd from downtown,” said Mayor Jonathan Weinzapfel. “Now we’ll be able to get more residents and visitors to come downtown, which will boost our revitalization efforts.” “We feel that the tight diamond urban interchange will work best for the needs of the motorists as well as the City’s goal of the interchange becoming the Gateway to the downtown area,” said Sam Sarvis, INDOT Vincennes District Deputy Commissioner. The new Fulton Avenue/Lloyd Interchange accompanies other traffic changes designed to make it easier and safer to drive into and around downtown. They’re also meant to handle an anticipated increase in traffic from business and residential expansion, cMOE, the new African American Museum, USS LST 325 and Casino Aztar and its entertainment district. Construction on the new interchange is estimated to begin Spring 2008 and will take approximately one year to complete. The estimated cost of the project is $36 million and will be funded through Governor Daniels’ “Major Moves” Program. Below is an artists’ rending of how the interchange will look after construction. In the upper left hand corner is a photo of the existing intersection.
