Food Safety Officials Zero In On Tainted Tomatoes
(Los Angeles, CA) -- A cluster of nine cases of Salmonella poisoning in the Chicago area may lead U.S. food safety officials to the source of the recent outbreak blamed on tomatoes.
FDA food safety director David Acheson says the nine individuals ate at two restaurants from the same restaurant chain, which he declined to identify.
The salmonella outbreak has caused more than 250 people in 28 states to become ill.
Health officials have linked the outbreak to raw plum, Roma and round tomatoes.
The produce from California, northern Florida and Baja California, Mexico has been declared safe to eat.
McDonalds, the worlds largest restaurant chain, says its restaurants in the U.S. will resume serving tomatoes.
