The Evansville Police officer accused of stealing $1000 from a drug dealer made his first appearance in court Wednesday. Gerald Rainey turned himself in Tuesday morning. He faces one count of theft in connection with the incident.
Investigators say Rainey made an arrest last week, but when officers got back to the station and counted the money confiscated in the bust..$1000 was missing. They claim that money was later found in Raineys car.
Raineys attorney claims his client is not guilty. Bill Gooden says investigators are taking the word of a drug dealer over the word of an officer.
Rainey is due back in court May 23.
