Helfrich park is one of the sites the task force decided on for the west sector pool. The other two are Howell park and Golfmoore. The task force is also looking at three options for a new pool in the south sector. Tucked away on the southside of town just off Kentucky avenue is a neighborhood park most people in the city know nothing about. "Its old. Its historical. It has an interesting history. Its lovely," says neighborhood watch president Nancy Currie. And many neighbors want it to stay that way. Akin park is one of the 14 possible locations the aquatic task force looked at for a new pool. "I have mixed emotions about it," says Currie. Crrie and her husband Bill were there as the task force narrowed those 14 locations down to six - three on the southside and three on the west. Currie says those who live around the park like it the way it is - they dont want a pool. "They dont even want a fountain because it would make it muddy. What would they think about a pool?" Neighbors got their wish when the task force decided Tepe park, Bellemeade park and Stanley Hall would be better options for a pool on the southside. One of those options - Tepe - sits well with Currie. "I think they should take the old pool out of Tepe because that will serave the most kids." But even better is her little known neighborhood park will stay exactly that way. What the task force decides is only a recommendation - its not the last word on the citys pools. They hope to get their final recommendation to the parks board by the end of May.
