Colin Powell was the first speaker in the City of Evansvilles Celebration of Diversity lecture series.
The former four-star general and Secretary of State walked in to a standing ovation Tuesday night at the Centre. He talked to the crowd about his experiences with Affirmative Action, relating stories from his days in the Army. Powell says fellow soldiers attributed his promotions to the color of his skin, but Powell says he didnt pay much attention to why he was promoted. He told the crowd that he simply tried to make the most of the opportunities he received.
He says he is proud of his black heritage, and those who sacrificed for hundreds of years so he could get the opportunities hes had.
He also says the military has been at the forefront of creating diversity and acceptance in the US.
He encouraged his audience to look at life "through the windshield" and not the "rear-view mirror".
