Hostage Situation Ends after Seven Hours, Suspect Arrested
Crawford County – Wednesday afternoon, April 18, at approximately 1:00 p.m., Todd Dunn, 44, of Brownsburg, was allegedly committing a burglary at a residence near Mooresville, IN, when the homeowner arrived and walked in on him. Dunn allegedly grabbed a shotgun he found inside the residence and ordered the homeowner to go outside. Dunn allegedly abducted the homeowner and fled the residence driving the owner’s vehicle, which was a white Dodge pickup truck. At approximately 4:13 p.m., Dunn was driving in the area of I-64 and S.R. 37 in Crawford County when the homeowner was able to escape by jumping from the vehicle. The homeowner ran into nearby woods and used his cell phone to notify police. Dunn fled from the area. Moments later, a Crawford County Sheriff’s Deputy observed the white Dodge pickup truck at the Express Mart, located on S.R. 37 in English. Dunn deliberately collided into the deputy’s car and then fled northbound on S.R. 37. The deputy’s patrol car was not drivable. Several minutes later, the suspect abandoned the Dodge pickup truck and car-jacked a black Chevrolet pickup truck on S.R. 37. The owner was not injured. As the vehicle was being pursued westbound on S.R. 64, sheriff deputies attempted to stop the vehicle by deploying stop sticks, but Dunn left the roadway and was able to continue westbound. Approximately 2 miles west of S.R. 66 the vehicle left the roadway on the south side and stopped in a residence’s yard, located at 4443 S.R. 64, Marengo. Dunn exited the vehicle with a 12 gauge shotgun, approached the residence’s back door and made entry by breaking the back door window. Troopers immediately received information that Alex Baker, 14, and Nicholas Baker, 7, were both inside the residence. A perimeter around the residence was quickly established by several different police agencies. Indiana State Police Hostage Negotiators were able to make contact with Dunn and determine that the children had not been harmed. The parents were nearby and in constant contact with negotiators.
